Michigan politicians are lining up with support behind Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga (http://www.detnews.com/article/20100603/METRO/6030471/1361/Lawmakers-urge-MLB-to-overturn-bad-call-for-Galarraga#), who lost out on the designation of pitching the 22nd perfect game in the history of Major League Baseball Thursday night after an admittedly wrong call by umpire Jim Joyce.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm said via Twitter that no matter what the ump said, she was declaring he pitched a perfect game. Granholm followed up on her promise this morning, issuing a proclamation from the Detroit Regional Chamber's Mackinac Policy Conference.

"I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby declare Armando Galarraga to have pitched a perfect game, and I join Tigers fans all across the globe in saluting his unassailable accomplishment -- the first perfect game in Tigers history," the final stanza of the proclamation declares.

Also on board: Rep. John Dingell, D-Dearborn, who commented on his Twitter.com account this morning he's drafting a resolution for consideration by the House of Representativeshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.detnews.com/article/20100603/METRO/6030471/1361/Lawmakers-urge-MLB-to-overturn-bad-call-for-Galarraga#) that would recognize Galarraga's accomplishment.

In a release, Dingell said he hoped the resolution would help make a case for Major League Baseball (http://www.detnews.com/article/20100603/METRO/6030471/1361/Lawmakers-urge-MLB-to-overturn-bad-call-for-Galarraga#) to reverse the admittedly wrong call by Joyce.

"Jim Joyce (http://www.detnews.com/article/20100603/METRO/6030471/1361/Lawmakers-urge-MLB-to-overturn-bad-call-for-Galarraga#) missed the call, but because he admitted it, we have a leg to stand on in our case to Major League Baseball," Dingell said. "Baseball's executives have corrected a mistake on the field in a regular season game -- before the pine tar game. This is the right thing to do and if getting this resolution passed makes it easier, I'm glad to help."

Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Lansing, also weighed in this morning, saying she wants MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to invoke the "best interest of the game" rule.

"Last night's performance deserves its place in the record books," Stabenow said in a statement. "It is clear that Commissioner Selig should make an exception in this case and invoke the 'best interests of the game clause' to reflect Armando Galarraga's perfect game for the Detroit Tigers (http://www.detnews.com/article/20100603/METRO/6030471/1361/Lawmakers-urge-MLB-to-overturn-bad-call-for-Galarraga#)."

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said he would look at the game's umpiring system and the expanded use of instant replay, but would not reverse the blown call that cost Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers a perfect game on Wednesday night.

"While the human element has always been an integral part of baseball, it is vital that mistakes on the field be addressed," Selig said in a statement. "Given last night's call and other recent events, I will examine our umpiring system, the expanded use of instant replay and all other related features."

Selig said he would consult with baseball's labor unions and the game's special committee for on-field matters before announcing any decisions.

Selig also praised umpire Jim Joyce, whose blown call in the bottom of the ninth cost Galarraga the perfect game, for his handling of the situation afterwards, as well as Galarraga and Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

"The dignity and class of the entire Detroit Tigers organization under such circumstances were truly admirable and embodied good sportsmanship of the highest order," Selig said. "[Galarraga] and Detroit manager Jim Leyland are to be commended for their handling of a very difficult situation.

"I also applaud the courage of umpire Jim Joyce to address this unfortunate situation honestly and directly. Jim's candor illustrates why he has earned the respect of on-field personnel throughout his accomplished career in the Major Leagues since 1989," Selig said.

Joyce admitted missing a call at first base Wednesday night on what would've been the final out, ruling Cleveland's Jason Donald beat a throw to the bag. The veteran ump personally apologized to Galarraga after the game and hugged him.

"It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the [stuff] out of it," Joyce said Wednesday night, looking and sounding distraught as he paced in the umpires' locker room. "I just cost that kid a perfect game."

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said the team will not ask MLB to overturn the call. St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says the call should be overturned.

Thursday, a visibly upset Joyce wiped away tears as he took the field for the Tigers' series finale against the Cleveland Indians. He and Galarraga met at home plate as the pitcher presented the umpire with the Tigers' lineup card. Joyce shook hands with Galarraga and patted him on the shoulder.

Leyland said MLB gave Joyce the option to not work Thursday's game, but Joyce chose to stick with his job behind the plate.

Currently, instant replay can only be used for questionable home runs.]

I think the politicians have a lot more "important" things to worry about.

MLB does this to themselves all the time. They avoided any kind of testing and look what that got them. They have been really against any kind of replay and now have a bs type of replay for Homeruns that doesn't even work all that well. MLB hasn't evolved in 30 years and it's their own doing.

true but i think it has alot to do with it being "americas past time" to a certain degree. its the sport of America, as many would say. technology and the world has changed and agree that the mlb should as well. regardless of the evolving issue, that is straight up a terrible decision. its not like it was a no hitter, it was a damn PERFECT GAME! only 20 have even occured in mlb history.

True but did the play in question happen on the very last play?? I don't know, I don't follow MLB anymore. If it was the very last play, then I would say overturn it, if not, then no. Hell, MLB doesn't even have their best hitter in the hall of fame. What's another perfect game ;)

I know that baseball used to be America's pastime, I'm thinking that Football took that position some time ago.

Yeah, it's weird for me...

I like to play baseball but don't like to watch it.

I like to watch Football but don't like to play it.

Basketball I loved as a kid, but I haven't played in years and don't like watching it.

Golf I like to act like I can play but who can watch that boring shit (it's not even really a sport).

Soccer, they've been tryin' to ram that down our throats for decades now (just like the metric system) telling us it's the next greatest thing but I find it boring like most Americans do.

As far as MMA goes, I love watching but couldn't imagine making a living like that.

My vote goes for MMA moving to the top of the list for America !

It's been #1 on my list for over a decade now.

i enjoy ALL of tghe above. golf being my least favorite. golf is terrible to watch, then baseball running in second. basketball (pro) next, then football. football is fantastic to watch imo. mma is indeed making laeps and bounds towards being the next big thing in America.

As far as golf and Baseball, I rank watching paint dry just above the two. Don't get me wrong, it's close but I give paint drying a slight lead. ;)

sadly alot of people could say the same thing about mma when yhou have guys grappling on the ground or laying and praying. i enjoy these types of sports for the one shot that cna make or break the whole outcome. basball it can be that one pitch for a PERFECT GAME, or maybe the grand slam to end the world series. mma it can be the russow KO of duffee. i just love the potential surprise aspects.

yeah iim happy too...3 secs more of that and i might have turned gay lol and im baseball there is so many bad calls tht games can be ruined or completely turned around....imagine football without replays...how bad would that be?
