Russian heavyweight Aleksander Emelianenko suffered an unexpected loss at the Combat Sports Accord Games 2010 in China this weekend.
The games have been ongoing for several days but the Sambo final only took place today and Aleksander - who is considered by many to be a better Sambo stylist than his brother Fedor - was beaten by a 29-year-old German standout.
Neither fighter scored a single point in the final but German player Stefan Janosch had Aleksander on the back foot for most of the match and was handed the win by the judges. Janosch had stormed through his opposition prior to the final as had Aleksander, although his performance in the final fell short of the standard he set in the qualifying bouts.
Janosch came second at the Sambo World Championships in 2008 and following his win this weekend announced that he will be pursuing a career in mixed martial arts, where he will most likely compete in the heavyweight division.
With Aleksander in second place, the bronze went to Lithuanian competitor Tadas Rimkevicius, a former Olympic wrestler for his country who has also competed in MMA. Tadas was defeated by Janosch earlier in the tournament but came back to take third place.
