Vitor Belfort has called for UFC president Dana White to allow him to fight James Toney - under boxing rules. Apparently Belfort also wants the UFC to stage the boxing match itself, presumably having the fight in the Octagon but under boxing rules.
“Dana let me fight James Toney on 6 round box[ing] match I think I can catch him with my speed,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
“Dana [it] will be the 1 boxing match in UFC I promise he will fell my power and we will show the world [that] a UFC fighter can do better.”
There is more chance of White’s boxing match with Tito Ortiz finally happening than the UFC making a fight between Toney and Belfort under boxing rules. Not only is it a pointless risk, White has said that the UFC is done with Toney following his three-minute loss to Randy Couture at UFC 118.
Toney is moving on to defend his IBA heavyweight belt in November while Belfort has a meeting with Yushin Okami at UFC 122. If he is successful there he will likely move on to get the middleweight title shot he would have had at UFC 112 had he not needed shoulder surgery.
