BBC 3 documentary on extreme weight cutting in MMA

Well worth a watch, BBC 3 doing a documentary on Dean Garnett and his weight cut for the Bellator card in London last July. and on a side note, he won on the ACB card last weekend in a highlight reel KO, via spinning kick to the liver.

    Anyone watch this?

Interesting that they note at the very end that going by the analysis of Dean throughout the cut, that he is doing definite damage to his liver and kidneys long term, and also that there remains no regulatory body for MMA......an issue we often bring up ourselves, and an issue really preventing the sport being considered legit IMO.

It would hold a lot more weight if it was a well known fighter, that's for sure.

That's a very simplistic view by Chandler though. He's definitely right, but if other guys are doing it, then it kinda forces all fighters to do it, or they get criticised for not doing it, like Gunnar Nelson does. The problem is, the vast majority of fighters don't know how to weight cut properly, and even if done properly, it still dehydrates their liver and kidneys causing lasting damage. I really don't want to see guys fight who near kill themselves to get there.......why not all just fight at their own weight.

It's part of the sport & it won't go away, the guys who do these documentaries are just going to to come under fire for being "amateurs", no matter what.

True, but even guys who've cut weight successfully all their lives, in wrestling too, like Johny Hendricks, are fucking it up.......it's not all amateurs, it's just not good for the body to cut so much weight, especially the day before someone will punch you repeatedly in the head.

Oh, I agree totally, but it's not going to go anywhere. There will always be guys looking to get that "edge" on their opponent, & weight cutting is one of the legal ways to get an edge, if you know what your doing.

Agreed........but you'd think there must be a way to get guys to fight at their true weight, or at least very close to it. #LookingForAUnicorn!
